Quick answer: A device, e-liquid, and (for most devices) spare coils. Everything else on this list is optional but makes the first few weeks easier.

You must be 21+ to purchase vapor products. Here's what you actually need to get set up.

1. A device

Disposable: pre-filled, pre-charged, no setup. The simplest way to try vaping with the least commitment.
Pod system: small and simple; pre-filled or refillable pods.
Vape pen: larger, better battery life, refillable tank with replaceable coils.
Box mod: adjustable power and more customization, usually paired with a separate tank.

Most first-time buyers start with a disposable or a simple pod system before moving to anything with settings to learn.

2. E-liquid

E-liquid is made of propylene glycol (PG) and vegetable glycerin (VG), plus flavoring and, optionally, nicotine. The PG/VG ratio changes the feel: more PG carries flavor and a sharper throat sensation, more VG makes thicker vapor. Nicotine strength is a personal choice, from 0mg up. 3. Coils (for most non-disposable devices)

The coil is the heating element that vaporizes the e-liquid. It wears out — usually every 1-2 weeks with regular use — and needs replacing when the flavor goes flat or starts tasting burnt.

4. Batteries (for box mods and some pens)

Simpler devices have a built-in rechargeable battery. Box mods usually take external rechargeable batteries (18650, 20700, or 21700). If your device uses external batteries, get a dedicated external charger — charging them through the mod's USB port works on some models but is slower and harder on the battery over time.

Worth having on hand

Spare coils so a burnt-out one doesn't leave you stuck.
Spare pods if your device uses pre-filled or built-in-coil pods.
Smaller e-liquid bottles if you buy in bulk.
A carrying case for the device when you're out.

A few safety basics

Buy gear and e-liquid from a retailer you trust.
If you use external batteries: don't carry loose cells with keys or coins, retire a wrapped battery if the wrap tears, and use the charger made for that battery.
Keep e-liquid, especially anything with nicotine, away from kids and pets.
